What is Pantomime Comedy?

Pantomime is a family-friendly musical comedy. It is actually a kind of theatrical entertainment in which words are replaced by gestures and bodily actions. In modern times, mime and pantomime have become the art of depicting a character or a story solely through body movements. Songs, gags, slapstick comedy, and dancing are all part of the modern pantomime. It features gender-bent actors and combines topical humor with a story based on a well-known fairy tale, fable, or folk tale. 
A pantomime's distinguishing features include the following components: 
  • Reversal of gender roles 
  • A story about good vs. Bad 
  • Slapstick humor 
  • Costumes that are bright and unusual 
  • Participation of the audience
  • Probably derived from a fairy tale or nursery rhyme.

When has pantomime started?

Pantomime is classified as a theater-type Commedia dell' Arte, a genre from Renaissance Italy. Pantomime is a theater type. It was first popular among royals and common people in Venice at the beginning of the 16th century. The audience was delighted with improvisation, comedy, costume, and performances. Participation in the audience, songs, and music also gained popularity in that theater style.
In the 18th century, John Rich introduced the name "Pantomime." The only known image of John Rich was uncovered in 2015. It was completely restored and hung in a London museum.

Recent Pantomime Comedy In Nepal

Nepal's first Comedy Reality Show, In Comedy Champion Season 2's - TOP 4 (Episode 34) performance, A Sikkim based (Nepali Language Spoken) Comedian Bkey Agarwal performed the Pantomime Comedy. 

This comedy was performed for the very first time in Comedy Champion set. Most Nepalese people were unaware of this kind of pantomime comedy before Bkey performed on stage. One of the Judges of Comedy Champion said that, " I didn't understand anything and that's why I don't laugh".

 

While the other three Judges and a gust judge admired his performance. Also, they gave very positive feedback for his dedication and the way of presenting comedy in a different genre.
